"Healthy food is SO boring!" As a nutritionist I can't tell you how many times I have heard this. Seriously though you guys... it couldn't be farther from the truth! So many claim healthy food is bland and will leave them feeling deprived yet they have never actually branched out and tried all of the amazing spices in their cabinet to see how their food can transform! I myself used to be afraid of the kitchen and I honestly thought at one time that it was easier to put more trust in a box or pre-made meal than to cook myself (I got married at 18 and didn't know the slightest thing about cooking or nutrition for that matter). When I finally discovered my passion for health and wellness I also discovered the beauty behind spices and seasonings and how much of a difference they made in my cooking! Basil, dill weed, mint, thyme, paprika and the list goes on and on. They are all so different yet all equally amazing and capable of giving our food a kick of flavor and a delicious taste!
One of the beauties of cooking in the kitchen is that countertop instantly becomes your canvas. You are the artist and you have the freedom to create whatever your heart desires! Listen though, I get it. Cooking and baking can be tricky and seriously intimidating! It can be messy and frustrating at times. But you know what? As with anything, its all about trial and error. Many recipes I have shared with you all started as a total flop (true story). I simply had to keep adding and taking away till the creation I dreamed of came to life... but it didn't happen instantly!
What I have discovered through endless hours in the kitchen over the years is my appreciation for delicious food made from scratch! Food is never just food to me. I think of everything that goes into what I make and I truly appreciate and savor every bite. Another perk about being in the kitchen is that it also helps us become more contentious about what we are putting into our bodies! You get to see and add every ingredient one by one and know exactly what you and your family are eating! I know for me this is very important and I'm sure for you it is as well!
Lastly, spending time in my kitchen has become one of my favorite ways to relax! How ironic is it that a decade ago I avoided cooking or baking at all costs because it gave me anxiety? Now almost every Sunday afternoon you will find me in the kitchen playing with spices and seasonings and creating something new! It's fun and rewarding and it has become one of my favorite creative outlets!
Okay, so enough of me chit chatting about spices, cooking and baking. Time for a serious question...what's holding you back from getting into that kitchen and testing out your culinary skills? Do you not know where to begin or do you think you are too far gone to learn? Listen to me. It is never too late to start learning and experimenting in the kitchen! My suggestion for you is to start gathering some yummy looking, preferably healthy recipes (oh hey Pinterest!) and then to challenge yourself to cook or bake something new just once a week. Before you know it, you will be at ease in the kitchen and maybe even comfortable enough to attempt your own recipes! I know if I can do it and learn to love it YOU can too! I'm cheering you on friend! Now, go get cookin!
