Walnuts: Nature's Antidepressant

Who would have thought that such a tiny nut could pack such a mood boosting punch? Did you know that walnuts contain loads of serotonin (our happy hormone)? In fact, walnuts have often been called "nautre's Xanax" and for very good reason! If you have been following my blog for very long you know that it is no secret that I have struggled with anxiety and depression since I was 19. Needless to say, I include a handful of walnuts in my diet almost on a daily basis.

I am a firm believer that our mood will reflect what we put into our bodies. Our brains need healthy fats, omegas and B vitamins to function properly. When we aren't eating from nature we can often leave our bodies starving for what it needs to make the proper neurotransmitters. All this to say, when we eat garbage in excess our happy mood can often be the first thing to go. Thankfully, walnuts are a perfect snack to carry with you in your purse or car. They don't require refrigeration and they last for months and months.

Now, though all walnuts are beneficial for us black walnuts specifically offer the most serotonin per gram. They may have a bit a stronger taste than you're accustomed to but the mood boosting effects are well worth it! Where English walnuts contain 87 mcg of serotonin per gram, black walnuts contain 304 mcg of serotonin per gram! I personally noticed quite a change in myself when I switched to black walnuts and ate a handful on a daily basis.

So if you struggle with anxiety, depression or are just feeling down one day than I encourage you to make walnuts your snack of choice! They really are quite powerful! When you include them in your diet on a routine basis I can bet you will start to feel happier and more at ease in no time! Give them a try!
