Ohhh the feel of that warm, summer sunshine on your skin is just the best isn't it? Honestly, as a teenager I used to bask in it for hours and not think twice. But now days, I know better. As glorious as that sunshine feels it is no secret that direct exposure to sunlight can put you at a higher risk for developing skin cancer and can lead to premature aging and sun spots. Unfortunately, skin cancer runs in my family and I myself recently have had to have a couple "questionable" moles removed despite my diligence in caring and protecting my skin. Now, typically in the warmer months I will purchase a zinc oxide sunscreen and use it on myself and the kids but this year I decided to experiment and come up with my own DIY sunscreen; one that would offer even a higher SPF than most brands and one with fewer ingredients. I must say, it took a few tries but I am thrilled with the final result! It has done a fantastic job protecting our skin so far this summer and it smells so fresh and citrusy! It is so effective and simple to make! Let's protect our skin together this summer shall we? Check out my recipe for my DIY sunscreen down below!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of organic white beeswax pellets

  • 1 cup of organic coconut oil

  • 1/3 cup of non-nano zinc oxide powder (I love the "Sky Organics Brand"

  • 1 tsp of organic grapefruit essential oil

  • 8 oz. mason jar

Directions:

Add all of the above ingredients to a medium sauce pan and cook at medium heat on the stove top until the mixture has reached a liquid consistency. Stir it well and then pour it into the mason jar. Allow it to harden on the counter top or in the fridge. Then, use it as needed! Happy Summer friends!
